Recently, a female patient came to Prof. Zeng’s clinic and reported that her period often “comes and goes”. It seems that her aunt is too clingy and visits her several times a month. The patient said that this situation had been going on for years and that she had been infertile for three years after marriage. Gynecological examination showed no other abnormalities. The former doctor used a large team of hemostatic drugs much to no avail. Master Zeng told the patient that this was a case of bleeding. Upon detailed questioning of the condition, it was found that her hands and feet had been cold for years, her waist was sore, she was dizzy, she was constipated, her tongue was light and fat, her moss was thin, and her pulse was thin. Master Zeng said that both partners should be examined for infertility, and if the male partner has no problem, the female partner can get pregnant if she adjusts her menstrual condition. This patient’s back pain and weakness and fat tongue are signs of deficiency of both spleen and kidney. In Chinese medicine, Qi has the function of regulating blood. If Qi does not regulate blood, menstruation will be incomplete or will go away. The treatment is to tonify both spleen and kidney, and to benefit qi to fix the collapse. The patient was treated with Astragalus, Radix Codonopsis, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Rhizoma Yam, Poria, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng, Rhizoma Cistanches, Radix et Rhizoma Ginseng. The patient returned to the clinic and reported significant improvement in the case of collapse. It is written in the “Eight Methods of Medical Doctors” by Cheng Guopeng that “tangible blood cannot be produced quickly; invisible qi should be fixed quickly”. On the contrary, in the above-mentioned patient with collapse and leakage, it is due to the deficiency of spleen qi and the failure of spleen to regulate blood that causes the malfunctioning of qi’s consolidation function, and blood cannot follow the veins normally and overflows out of them, thus resulting in “collapse and leakage”. When Qi does not regulate Blood, it can also manifest as stomach bleeding, lung bleeding, and blood in the stool, in addition to collapse and leakage. In clinical cases of critical symptoms in patients with hemorrhage, large doses of qi tonics are often used to consolidate the blood. In the Jin-Yuan period, Li Dong Yuan’s “Treatise on Internal and External Injuries” recorded that “Angelica tonic blood soup” was applied with five times the dose of Huang Qi to tonify Qi and double the amount of Angelica tonic blood, which is a specific application of Qi being able to produce and take in blood.
