The location of the aorta is behind the sternum in the thoracic and abdominal cavities. The aorta is the backbone of the arteries of the body circulation, the main conduit for delivering blood to all parts of the body, also called the aorta, and is the thickest arterial tube in the human body. The aorta starts from the left ventricle of the heart, passes through the right side of the pulmonary artery to the right side of the 2nd thoracic rib joint, turns left behind the arch to the left side of the lower edge of the 4th thoracic vertebrae, and then descends downward to the 12th thoracic vertebrae, passes through the aortic fissure of the pleural diaphragm and enters the abdominal cavity, and descends anteriorly to the spine to the lower edge of the 4th lumbar vertebrae, where it divides into the left and right common iliac arteries and a tiny middle sacral artery. The location of the aorta is within the thoracic and abdominal cavities, so it is not palpable on the body surface. The blood pressure in the arteries can be higher than that in the veins, and if the arteries are traumatized it is important to seek medical attention and treatment as prescribed.
