The efficacy of Tonifying Yang and Returning Five Soup is to tonify Qi and activate Blood (to replenish Qi and Blood, so that the body is full of Qi and Blood and the blood vessels are smooth), disperse blood stasis and open up collaterals. It is generally used for patients who see deficiency of Qi and Blood after stroke. If there are obvious symptoms of hyperactivity of Yang after stroke, it is not suitable to use Tonifying Yang Returning Five Soup. Composed of Astragalus, Radix Angelicae Sinensis, Radix Paeoniae Alba, Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, Rhizoma Ligustici, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, Rhizoma Safflower, and Rhizoma Polygonati Odorati, the effects of this formula are to replenish vital energy, invigorate blood circulation, and promote circulation of blood vessels. It can treat the symptoms of Qi deficiency and blood stasis in stroke. Hemiplegia (inability to move one side of the limb freely), askew mouth and eyes, speech outpouring, salivation at the corners of the mouth (drooling), frequent urination or urinary incontinence, with a dull tongue, white moss, and a slow and feeble pulse. This formula should be taken for a long time to be effective, and should be continued after healing to consolidate the effect and prevent recurrence. However, if post-stroke hemiplegia (inability to move one side of the limb freely) is due to yin deficiency and hyperactivity of yang (deficiency of yin fluid and hyperactivity of yang qi), or phlegm obstruction and blood stasis, with red tongue, yellow moss, and large, strong pulse, this formula is not suitable for the patient. The medication should be taken under the guidance of a professional physician, and should not be taken on one’s own, so as not to cause delay in the condition.
