What to pay attention to when exercising with diabetes

Exercise therapy is also one of the basic measures of diabetes treatment, especially for overweight patients with T2DM. Exercise can enhance insulin sensitivity, reduce body weight and improve the degree of disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism, therefore, individualized exercise programs should be developed according to the patient’s gender, age, presence or absence of complications and their severity. The duration of exercise should be 30 minutes to 60 minutes per day, divided into one to two sessions, and the initial amount of exercise should be small and the duration should not be long, gradually increasing until it reaches the amount of exercise suitable for the individual. It should be noted that strenuous exercise is not recommended when fasting or blood glucose is higher than 13 mmol/L. It is also not advisable to exercise vigorously at the peak of the drug effect. Patients with diabetes who receive insulin injections should avoid strenuous exercise at the injection site. In addition, patients with retinopathy should not exercise too much to avoid inducing fundus hemorrhage, patients with serious heart, liver, kidney and lung diseases, acute infections and acute complications. If symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, profuse sweating and pallor occur during exercise, they should be immediately discontinued, and if hypoglycemia occurs, eat some food or sugary drinks and seek medical attention if necessary.
