What if I wake up with a rapid heartbeat?

Waking up due to rapid heartbeat is generally considered to be related to physiological, tachyarrhythmia and acute attack of heart failure. Physiological can be relieved after calm rest; tachyarrhythmia needs to be treated with medication such as metoprolol, amiodarone, etc.; and acute attack of heart failure needs to be treated by oxygen absorption, elevation of the head of the bed, and the use of medication such as furosemide and sodium nitroprusside.
1. Physiological: when sleeping with nightmares, it may lead to emotional tension, excitement or shock, or exercise, drinking strong tea, coffee, etc. before going to bed will activate the sympathetic nerves, and may appear the heart rate increase, usually without special treatment, and can be relieved after calm rest.
2. Tachyarrhythmia: such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and other tachyarrhythmias, the patient can be a sudden onset of sleep, the heart rate of >100 beats / min, the patient woke up with obvious panic, sweating and other discomforts, generally need to choose the antiarrhythmic drugs such as metoprolol, mesylate, amiodarone and other antiarrhythmic drug treatment.
3. Acute exacerbation of heart failure: the patient’s heart function is weakened, and the increase in the volume of return blood when lying down to sleep and the increased burden on the heart will lead to a compensatory acceleration of the heart rate, and there will be shortness of breath, panic, suffocation of waking and other symptoms. General treatment includes oxygen absorption, elevation of the head of the bed, etc. Drug treatment includes diuretics such as furosemide and vasodilators such as sodium nitroprusside.
If patients wake up with accelerated heart rate during sleep and cannot be relieved after resting, it is recommended to go to the hospital in time to find out the cause and actively treat the problem, and the medication should be taken under the guidance of a physician.
