Many people in life have encountered this situation, after yawning, the open mouth seems to be stuck, must be “thump” to close the mouth. Other people have pain on both sides of their ears when they open their mouths and eat. In fact, this is TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder has a high prevalence in TMJ disorders, but awareness of this disease is low. Many patients who come to the clinic are aware of it for the first time, and there are relatively few specialists in this area, so they often do not receive a timely and correct diagnosis and delay treatment. Many people only come to the doctor when the pain becomes unbearable. The temporomandibular joint is located in the preauricular area on both sides of the face and is one of the many joints in the body, along with the shoulder and elbow joints. Therefore, diseases of all other joints are equally present in the TMJ, such as common joint dislocations, joint dysfunctions, joint infections, and specific inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, joint ankylosis, tumors and tumor-like diseases. Temporomandibular joint disorders account for 90% of these disorders. The TMJ is the only bilaterally linked joint in the whole body, i.e. one mandible, two TMJs, and when one side is diseased, the other side is also affected, which is why a significant percentage of patients in clinical practice are affected bilaterally. The temporomandibular joint produces various important activities related to mastication, swallowing, speech and expression under the action of muscles. Once the disease is not treated in time, it not only affects normal speech and diet, but also has the potential to turn malignant, like synovial tumor in the temporomandibular joint. In addition, malignant tumors such as osteosarcoma that originate in the joint have similar early manifestations to TMJ disorders, which can eventually lead to serious facial deformities and even life-threatening conditions if not taken seriously. Therefore, although the joints are small, they can also have serious diseases and their dangers cannot be ignored. The most common TMJ disorders are related to mental tension, night grinding, clenching of teeth, biting of hard sticky objects, wide open mouth, cold stimulation, trauma to the joint, malocclusion, lateral chewing, and excessive tooth wear. The main clinical manifestations include pain around the joints in the preauricular region, which is aggravated on both sides of the face when opening the mouth, chewing or clenching the teeth; “clicking”, “clicking” and “broken glass” in the preauricular region when opening or closing the mouth. There are unpleasant sounds like “broken glass”, “bone rubbing”, etc., and movement disorders such as inability to open the mouth widely, close the mouth or open the mouth completely. As a TMJ specialist, I would like to remind everyone that if the above-mentioned symptoms appear, the mind must pay great attention to them and go to the hospital in time. The current method of joint cavity irrigation with occlusal plate treatment has greatly improved the cure rate of TMJ disease and saved many patients from surgery. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen prevention in ordinary life, eat less hard and sticky food, do not get cold in the TMJ area, and keep a happy mood.
