Sequelae of HFMD include nail loss, and although the vast majority of children do not lose their nails after the onset of HFMD, very rarely HFMD causes nail loss in children. The exact cause of nail loss in HFMD is not yet fully understood. The main reason for nail loss is that the growth of nails is impaired due to secondary infection, which can be caused by taking more calcium supplements and eating more vegetables and fruits. Parents do not need to worry too much if their children’s nails fall off, as most nails will grow back on their own after some time.
