Clinically there is no statement that you can drink alcohol a few hours after taking metronidazole, and patients are forbidden to drink alcohol during the medication and 1 week after stopping the medication.
Metronidazole in the clinic is mainly used for the treatment or prevention of systemic or localized infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, belonging to the anti-amoebic, anti-trichostatic and anti-anaerobic drugs. Common adverse reactions include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, sensory abnormalities.
However, it is contraindicated in patients with active central nervous system disorders, blood disorders, pregnant women, lactating women, children and patients with alcoholism, and those who are allergic to metronidazole or other nitroimidazole derivatives. Patients are prohibited from drinking alcohol while taking the drug, try to stop the drug for 1 week before considering drinking alcohol.
The main reason is that the drug can inhibit the enzyme of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, which leads to the strengthening of the effect of ethanol, and if the patient drinks alcohol while taking the drug, it will lead to disulfiram-like reaction. Therefore, patients need to read the instructions carefully before taking the drug, or strictly follow the doctor’s instructions to use the drug, avoid drinking alcohol, so as not to cause serious harm to the organism, and even affect the efficacy of the drug, resulting in aggravation of the condition.
Before using metronidazole drugs, it is recommended that patients go to the hospital to consult a doctor before the appropriate treatment.
