Is there radiation in the hair after iodine 131 treatment

After iodine 131 treatment, the patient’s hair may have traces of radiation.
Patients taking oral iodine 131 on an empty stomach after 2-3 hours after oral iodine 131 is almost completely absorbed into the blood, iodine 131 in the blood by the thyroid follicular cell concentration, beta particles produced by the decay of thyroid cells through the ionization effect of the destruction of the thyroid cells, therefore, iodine 131 treatment can be used for the treatment of hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer and other diseases.
Since the beta particles radiated by iodine 131 have a short average range, the effect is generally limited to the thyroid tissue itself and usually does not cause radiation damage to the surrounding tissues, so there may be trace amounts of radiation in the hair of patients who have undergone iodine 131 treatment.
After iodine-131 treatment, it is important to avoid pregnant women, small infants in the home, or older people who are in poor health. The relatively short rays may basically decay within a few days. However, there are some slightly longer rays, which may decay in 7-10 days. It is usually recommended to isolate yourself from your family for 10-14 days after Iodine-131 treatment.
In addition, it is also related to the dosage. If the dosage is relatively low, the whole amount will be low, and the amount of attenuation will be fast. However, if the dosage is relatively large, the rate of decay will also be slower, and the relative time may have to be prolonged. If iodine-131 treatment is needed, isolation must be considered, especially for pregnant women.
Patients are advised to go to the endocrinology department of regular hospitals for detailed consultation.
