Because most haematomas are self-absorbing and heal spontaneously through mechanisation, priority is given to non-surgical treatment of haematomas within the duodenal wall without rupture, including gastrointestinal decompression, nutritional support and antibiotic injections. Most haematomas are absorbed by the body within two weeks and heal spontaneously through mechanisation. In the minority of cases where obstruction does not occur, surgical incision of the intestinal wall to remove the haematoma is then considered.
