Typical symptoms following injury to the stomach and duodenum include bleeding and epigastric pain. Haemorrhage is mainly in the form of blood in the stool and vomiting, in mild cases only black stools or vomiting of coffee-coloured material, or in severe cases haemorrhagic shock. The intensity of the symptoms depends on the amount of bleeding, the rate of bleeding, the site of bleeding, the age of the patient and the physical condition. The abdominal pain is mainly epigastric and the nature of the pain includes dull, burning, distending and sharp pains.
