Is gastroesophageal reflux an early stage of gastric cancer?

Gastroesophageal reflux is not an early stage of gastric cancer and there is no significant relationship between the two. Gastroesophageal reflux is a benign disease that is caused by reflux of gastric contents causing discomfort and/or complications due to a weakened anti-reflux barrier. Gastroesophageal reflux can be controlled clinically through pharmacological treatment. Commonly used drugs include prokinetics, acid suppressants, mucosal protectors and esophageal sphincter relaxation inhibitors. Gastric cancer is a malignant tumor originating from epithelial cells of gastric mucosa, most of which are adenocarcinoma. Precancerous changes are divided into precancerous diseases and precancerous lesions, which mainly include epithelial hyperplasia, atrophic gastritis and heterogeneous hyperplasia, gastric polyps, residual gastritis, and gastric ulcer. Early gastric cancer refers to gastric cancer whose lesions are limited and the depth does not exceed the submucosa layer, and 80% of early gastric cancer is asymptomatic, and some patients may have indigestion symptoms. Patients are recommended to go to hospital for X-ray and other related examinations to clarify whether they are suffering from early gastric cancer. Once diagnosed, patients should listen to professional doctor’s advice and take endoscopic mucosal resection or endoscopic submucosal dissection as active treatment to avoid aggravation of the disease.
