Blood stasis is a Chinese medical term that refers to a pathological condition in which the blood does not run smoothly or in which the blood is stagnant and impassable. Under normal circumstances, blood runs in the veins and flows throughout the body, playing a nutritive and moisturizing role. If the blood does not run smoothly due to Qi stagnation or Qi deficiency, or if the blood overflows out of the veins due to traumatic injury and cannot be discharged in time, it becomes a pathological state of Blood stasis. Clinical manifestations of blood stasis include body pain, pain like pins and needles, pain in a fixed place, often aggravated at night; stools as black as tar; sallow face, skin with nail faults (rough and dry skin, like the interlocking scales and nails of a dried fish), lips and claws purple, or purple spots under the skin, or abdominal tendons exposed, or lower limbs tendons green, swollen, and painful; and a purple tongue with petechiae or ecchymotic spots. Symptoms related to blood stasis should be consulted promptly, and do not self-medicate to avoid adverse incidents.
