Are tonsil stones serious?

Tonsil stones are not serious, but tonsil stones can cause symptoms related to tonsil swelling and pain, bad breath, and recurrent inflammation in patients. Tonsil stones are caused by prolonged intake of spicy and stimulating foods and lack of attention to oral hygiene, which leads to tonsil secretions that cannot be discharged from the body and form crystals at the mouth of the superior tonsillar crypt, thus forming an impaction. On examination, unilateral enlargement of the tonsils is evident, and pale white or yellowish granules are found at the upper pole of the tonsils, at the opening of the superior crypt, which can be dislodged when squeezed. In terms of treatment, if the stones appear occasionally, the patient needs to eat a light diet, avoid colds, avoid inflammation of the tonsils, and go to the hospital for tonsil lavage. In case of recurrent stones, the patient needs to undergo tonsillectomy, which requires hospitalization and can be discharged in about a week.
