Pneumonia can cause shadows in the lungs. Infectious diseases of the lungs are an important cause of lung shadows. If there is an infection in the lungs, inflammatory material will settle in the lungs and this will show up as a shadowed section on a CT scan. Shadows tend to appear as flakes on a chest X-ray.
