When is the best time to operate on a newborn baby with a floating thumb?

When the whole family is looking forward to the arrival of their child, but it turns out that the fingers are floating bunions, in order for the child not to have psychological problems in the future because of other people’s different eyes, the parents would like to have the surgery as soon as possible, so that the child can be restored to normal as soon as possible. Parents’ feelings are understandable, but the exact timing of the surgery depends on the type of surgical plan, and the age of the surgery is different for different surgical plans. At present, there are two main surgical options for floating bunion: metatarsal bone reconstruction and hallux valgus bone graft reconstruction. Metatarsal reconstruction is the most common surgical option used in China to treat bunions. It involves removing bone from the child’s foot to rebuild the first metacarpal bone, so the child should not be too young. The child cannot bear weight for three months after the surgery, and the care during this period will be tedious, and there is also a certain chance of bone resorption and necrosis. Although the procedure can preserve the five fingers, the foot will be permanently damaged and the child will not be able to run or jump strenuously. Semi-metacarpal bone graft reconstruction is the main surgical option that I currently use, this option is to reconstruct the first metacarpal bone from the second metacarpal bone, the whole surgery is only performed on the hand, the care is relatively simple, the chance of bone resorption and necrosis will be greatly reduced, the function and appearance of the postoperative period is more ideal. The main thing is that half-metacarpal bone graft reconstruction can advance the age of surgery. As long as the child is healthy, has no other problems, has a standardized weight, and the metacarpal bone is of the right width, the child can undergo the surgery between the ages of 6 months and 1 year.
