Nasal mucosal ulceration and atrophy need to be distinguished from nasal congestion, which is generally a foreign body sensation in the nasal cavity, nasal blockage, and poor ventilation, often due to mucosal edema or thick mucus blocking the nasopharynx and nasal passages, resulting in narrowing of the nasal passages. It is often caused by rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal tumors and polyps that block the breathing passages of the nasal cavity. Patients with nasal mucosal ulceration and atrophy have nodular infiltrates under the nasal mucosa, followed by erosion, which can lead to scarring adhesions. Atrophy occurs in late stages due to dry crusting of the nasal cavity. Narrowing of the anterior nostril occurs. Pale and thickened nasal mucosa, increased secretions, pus and rhinorrhea may occur, often due to chronic inflammation, sphenoid or momentary nasal septum, nasal septal perforation, atrophic rhinitis, acute infection of nose and sinuses, tumors, leprosy, etc.
