Cough variant asthma is essentially a type of asthma, also known as specific type of asthma or atypical asthma. Cough variant asthma is asthma in which coughing is the only or main symptom. Cough variant asthma is a common cause of chronic cough. It is usually characterized by an irritating, paroxysmal dry cough that is strong, especially worse at night and in the early morning hours. In addition, cold air, dust, colds and fumes can easily cause or aggravate the cough. The diagnosis of cough variant asthma is based on the results of pulmonary function tests such as bronchodilator or provocation tests. Treatment is similar to that of typical asthma, with the use of bronchodilators combined with inhaled glucocorticoids such as budesonide formoterol powder inhaler, and antagonistic leukotriene receptor drugs such as montelukast.
