Can lymphedema heal on its own after breast cancer surgery?

It is impossible for lymphedema to heal on its own after breast cancer surgery, and it will only get worse if left untreated. The reason why edema occurs after surgery is that, on the one hand, axillary lymph node dissection destroys and damages the lymphatic vessels, obstructs lymphatic return to the upper extremities, and retains a large amount of lymphatic fluid, which results in edema. On the other hand, the retention of large amount of lymphatic fluid in the lymphatic vessels will prompt the remaining lymphatic vessels to expand in order to increase the transfer of lymphatic fluid, which will in turn increase the load on the normal lymphatic vessels, and the prolonged overload will in turn damage the lymphatic vessels and further reduce the transfer function of the lymphatic vessels, which in turn will aggravate edema, thus forming a vicious circle. Therefore, it is very unlikely that lymphedema will heal on its own after breast cancer surgery.
