A fracture of five ribs is a serious condition, but it needs to be combined with CT and 3D reconstruction to see how displaced the fracture is. If the fracture is significantly displaced and there are serious complications such as hemopneumothorax, this is a serious and life-threatening condition. If this occurs, active surgical treatment is required. Closed chest drainage is needed to drain the blood and gas from the chest cavity to restore normal respiratory function; if necessary, a rib fixator can be used to reset the displaced rib to prevent the fracture from re-dislocating. For patients without significant displacement and without serious complications such as hemopneumothorax, conservative treatment can be used. A rib fixation band or brace can be used to immobilize the thorax to avoid local compression and prevent the fracture from re-dislocating; at the same time, oral Chinese medicines can be taken to promote the recovery of the fracture.
