Human qualities of neurosurgeons

Under the traditional medical education system, what we get in school education and post-graduation education are medical knowledge and clinical ability, but what we lack is the education of humanistic quality. “Science” teaches us how to do things, while “humanities” educates us how to be a human being, and “to be a human being before doing anything” requires us to strive to improve our humanistic quality. Chinese neurosurgeons should pursue the joint improvement of scientific quality and humanistic quality. Compared with more than a decade ago, the education of Chinese neurosurgeons is rapidly improving, and postgraduate degrees have become the basic requirement for young physicians to enter the field of neurosurgery. However, we also need to pay special attention to the problems of high education, low clinical competence and low humanistic quality of many young physicians. When we proudly claim that the surgical skills of Chinese doctors are of world class, can we also claim that the humanistic quality of Chinese doctors is also of world class? We must be soberly aware of: where is the real gap with foreign advanced countries neurosurgeons? 1, the basic connotation of humanistic quality humanistic quality refers to a person to become a “person” and the development of “talent” of the inner quality, is the composition of the human temperament, manners and personality of the inner factors, is a kind of rooted in a person’s inner quality, expressed in a person’s It is a kind of quality rooted in one’s heart and expressed in one’s behavior and speech. Humanistic quality includes four aspects: humanistic knowledge (history, literature, art, language, philosophy, morality, politics, law, religion), humanistic thoughts, humanistic methods (cognitive and practical methods) and humanistic spirit (worldview and values). Humanistic spirit is the core, highlighting the importance of human beings in the relationship between human beings and society, human beings and nature and human beings, emphasizing the principle of people-oriented and equal for all, which embodies the true essence of human civilization, national spirit and the spirit of the times. The formation of humanistic quality mainly depends on our acquired humanistic education, including humanities education, cultural education (the education of national culture should be emphasized), human consciousness education and spiritual cultivation education. Humanistic quality and scientific quality are a unity. Science without humanities is not science in the true sense, and humanities without science is not humanities in the true sense. For a country, a nation or a person, without scientific quality, a fight will collapse; and without humanistic quality, it will not collapse. 2, the importance of humanistic education of physicians The ancient Chinese medical doctors said that “medical art is benevolent art”, and doctors are “benevolent people”. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates said “medicine is the most beautiful and noble of all techniques”, and doctors should have all the best qualities of philosophers: selflessness, modesty, nobility, judgment, knowledge and non-superstition. When we are faced with many academic difficulties deep in confusion, the fundamental problem is the problem of humanistic qualities, the result of the mutual detachment of scientific and humanistic qualities. On the issue of theory and practice, some people say: it is easy to know and difficult to do, while others say: it is easy to know and difficult to do. Wang Yangming, a thinker of the Ming Dynasty, emphasized that knowledge and practice are in harmony. Knowing refers to theory, and doing refers to practice. “Knowing and doing” means that theory is related to practice, and theory without practice is empty theory, and practice without theory is blind practice. It is important to know the truth, to have lofty and great aspirations, and it is equally important to have practical application, to have practical methods and to put them into practice on the ground. In the school education stage, we can talk about “knowledge and then action”, that is, learning book knowledge first; in the clinical work after graduation, we must talk about “knowledge and action”, while continuing to learn book knowledge, we should focus on clinical practice. In the clinical work, we should have the ability to raise problems continuously and also have the method to solve the problems. You cannot have the ability to ask questions without the ability to solve problems, or even neither of these two abilities. Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping are both shining examples of linking theory with practice in the course of modern Chinese history, and Tao Xingchi, a modern educator, has made “the unity of knowledge and practice” his lifelong code of conduct. The improvement of humanistic quality of physicians depends on both the general social environment and physicians’ own efforts. The Ministry of Health and the Chinese Medical Association have launched a nationwide campaign to become “humanistic physicians”, with the aim of improving the overall quality of 2 million Chinese physicians, including the quality of medical science and humanistic quality. Happily, many of our neurosurgeons are now paying attention to the humanistic quality of physicians. Humanistic quality is the quality of being human, to achieve professional knowledge, clear thinking, noble personality, improve the humanistic quality of Chinese neurosurgeons, to be a conscientious, wise and cultivated physician. Humanistic quality is like human blood soaked in every part of the body, low humanistic quality is like suffering from anemia, which will eventually affect the overall development of physicians. In the West, neurosurgery is at the tip of the medical pyramid, and neurosurgeons are the most respected professional group in society. The causes of the current social conflict between doctors and patients are social factors, patient factors and medical factors, and what we can do is to start from ourselves, Chinese neurosurgeons should establish a sense of professional honor, to continuously improve their own professional quality, to win the respect of society and patients with our high quality performance. Chinese neurosurgeons should constantly improve their overall quality, to “to conscience”, by improving their own cultivation and knowledge, to remove their own selfish desires and bad thoughts, so as to achieve social harmony purposes. The ancient Chinese intellectuals for the realization of life’s ideal (value) of the highest level is “establish morality, speech, and merit”, our modern Chinese neurosurgeons in improving the level of medical skills, but also to assume social responsibility, to do “first the world’s worries and worries, after the world’s happiness and happiness “, to be a neurosurgeon with a sense of social responsibility. In the process of medical reform in China, through learning to strengthen their own cultivation, and constantly improve their own medical science and humanistic level, so as to be recognized by society, reflecting the value of life of physicians, to achieve the ideal of life of physicians. 3, the embodiment of humanistic quality of Chinese neurosurgeons For Chinese neurosurgeons, hard learning and continuous practice is an important way to improve humanistic quality. Knowledge is the basis of quality, ability is the performance of quality, without knowledge there is no basis for the formation of good quality, there will be no strong ability. In addition to learning medical knowledge, we should learn more about Chinese traditional culture and the history of medical development at home and abroad, we should study philosophy and literature, we should develop interest in art, and other social knowledge. Zhu Xi, a thinker of the Song Dynasty, preached: grasp the material and the reason, which means that one should develop an attitude of lifelong learning, and only by continuous learning can one understand things. Sun Simiao, a medical doctor of the Tang Dynasty, emphasized that in addition to medical knowledge, one should also study the Five Classics, Three Histories, and Zhuzi and Zhuang Lao. At the opening banquet of a European academic conference in May 2007, a 2-year-old European girl threw the waste in her hands into the garbage can on her own initiative, and her good behavior moved the Chinese medical experts who attended the conference. In terms of improving the humanistic quality of physicians, it is never too late to start learning at any time during our lifetime of medical practice, as long as we recognize the importance of this issue and establish the spirit of living and learning. Neurosurgeons, who have both solid medical theory and rich clinical practice in their medical careers, have made outstanding contributions to the development of neurosurgery in China and are shining examples for all Chinese neurosurgeons. Behind their success are: education, study, practice, experience, culture and other comprehensive factors, especially their humanistic quality is very high, each has a distinctive character charm, is a unity of scientific quality and humanistic quality, reflecting the absolute style of the older generation of experts. While we young physicians see the successful side of the masters, we must seek and learn the things behind their success, to understand: why they can succeed? What determines their success? How can we succeed? The level of humanistic quality determines different personality performance, we should improve our humanistic quality from two aspects: external performance and internal quality. Whether a person is cultivated or not is often shown in his speech and behavior, but the root is in his humanistic quality. Our words and actions are a reflection of the inner quality, without the inner quality, the appearance can not be expressed, with the inner quality, the outer naturally can be expressed. When we try to improve our own humanistic quality, we should start from little things, and we should start from the simplest things around us: come to work in the hospital dressed formally, no shorts; white clothes should be clean and flat, no blood stains and stains; keep the ward quiet, medical staff do not talk loudly; doctor’s office should be neat and tidy, no clutter placed; ward environmental hygiene should be neat, no corridors, bathrooms and utility rooms odor. In medical activities, doctors should treat patients with affection, “People are not grass, who can have no feelings? We should do our best to relieve the pain of patients. Nowadays, some postgraduates and doctors have a low level of thesis writing, which is mainly manifested in unclear logical thinking, poorly expressed words, punctuation and grammatical errors, and poorly decorated words and phrases, all of which reflect a low level of language. Therefore, to read more good literary works, or even re-learn the language textbooks of middle school and high school, and try to improve the language and literature level is the main study task of current medical students and postgraduates. From the point of view of language ability, whether a person has wisdom is mainly reflected in thinking, scientific research requires rigorous logical thinking, and thinking is expressed through language and writing. The level of language and writing cultivation directly affects the strength of one’s thinking ability, and literary cultivation can in turn affect one’s ability to express oneself in language. National language is a manifestation of national self-confidence. Chinese neurosurgeons should have the ability to use Chinese precisely and elegantly, and with good language quality, they have higher ability to express oral and written language; with good literary quality, they have higher comprehension, appreciation and creativity, and they can express their academic thoughts and opinions clearly. Scientific research results need to be expressed using accurate and vivid language, and it is difficult for a person who cannot even use language well to write a good scientific paper. In the discussion of the paper, it is important to cite more data, results and ideas from other scholars’ papers in China, not just your own articles, and it is a virtue to praise others. Many of our physicians often go abroad to attend academic conferences and study abroad. While learning advanced medical knowledge abroad, we should also pay attention to learning the humanistic qualities of foreign physicians. In foreign academic venues, very few people constantly enter and leave the venue for no reason, very few cell phones ring, very few people talk loudly off stage, very few people wear casual clothes to attend meetings and work, and so on. All of these reflect their humanistic quality: respecting others as well as themselves. And they are extremely aggressive in academics, as shown by their active questioning and communication, and their courage to express their views. We always talk about the need to converge with foreign medicine and pay more attention to the convergence of software conditions along with the convergence of hardware conditions. With the continuous improvement of China’s economic strength, the hardware conditions of our meeting places are now improving and even have a tendency to exceed those of foreign countries, but have our software conditions improved? The most important software conditions are expressed in the comprehensive quality of Chinese neurosurgeons, to continuously improve our comprehensive quality, to really reach convergence with foreign countries, we have to go a long way, may be 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, or even longer.
