Emergency surgery is recommended for adnexal torsion. The longer the adnexal torsion lasts, the more serious the complications may be, so surgery is recommended once the diagnosis is confirmed.
Adnexal torsion is a common gynecologic emergency, and the patient usually suffers from significant abdominal pain. In addition, emergency laparoscopic exploration is usually recommended whenever there is a high suspicion of adnexal torsion, as the torsion affects the blood supply to the ovaries, which can lead to ovarian necrosis in severe cases.
The extent of surgery for adnexal torsion is not the same and is usually determined by the condition of the ovary and the age of the patient. If the ovary is completely necrotic or if the patient is near menopause with an ovarian cyst, the affected adnexa is often removed, but if the ovary is not necrotic and the patient is young, ovarian restoration followed by ovarian cyst debridement is usually recommended.
Patients with significant abdominal pain and suspected adnexal torsion are advised to seek immediate medical attention and treatment as prescribed.
