Kidney deficiency is categorized into kidney qi deficiency, kidney yin deficiency and kidney yang deficiency. To determine whether the kidney is deficient or not, you can judge by the symptoms, tongue and pulse. For example, the symptoms of kidney qi deficiency are soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, fatigue (mental exhaustion and physical weakness), long and clear urine, men’s spermatorrhea, women’s scanty diarrhea, pale tongue and white moss, and a weak pulse. 1. Kidney yin deficiency: symptoms include soreness and weakness of the waist and knees, dry thirst and throat, tinnitus and deafness, hot flashes and night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep and stopping sweating after waking up), heart-heat (heat in the hearts of the hands and feet and self-consciousness of the heart and chest (irritability and sultriness)), a red tongue with little fluids and less moss, and a pulse that is fine and countless (the pulse is becoming narrower and finer, and the rate is accelerated). 2. Kidney Yang Deficiency: Symptoms include coldness of the waist and knees, coldness of the limbs, frequent urination, diarrhea (diarrhea before dawn), impotence of men, pale menstruation of women, and small amount of menstruation; the tongue is pale and fat, the moss is white, and the pulse is slow and weak. If there are signs of kidney deficiency, one should consult a clinician and follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment.
