Patients with appendicitis who present with significant pain are not advised to take their own medication for pain relief at home, but to seek immediate medical attention. The presence of pain in an appendicitis attack is an important signal to the patient that something is wrong with the body, and at this point, if pain relief is blindly given, it may mask the condition, delay the consultation and miss the best time for treatment. In severe cases, if the appendix is perforated and diffuse peritonitis occurs, it will manifest as pain in the right side of the lower abdomen, which is progressively worse and accompanied by significant fever and diarrhea or rectal irritation, which can even be life-threatening.
