What are the side effects of levofloxacin?

Common side effects of levofloxacin are nausea, vomiting, dizziness and headache. Serious and other important adverse reactions include tendonitis and tendon rupture, exacerbation of myasthenia gravis, hypersensitivity reactions, hepatotoxicity, CNS effects, peripheral neuropathy, prolongation of the QT interval, dysglycemia, photosensitivity/photototoxicity, and musculoskeletal disorders in pediatric patients. The main mechanism of action of levofloxacin is to inhibit the activity of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV of bacteria, hindering the replication of bacterial DNA and ultimately leading to bacterial death. It is indicated for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia and hospital-acquired pneumonia caused by sensitive bacteria in adults, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis. When a patient first develops a rash or other symptoms of a hypersensitivity reaction after using Levofloxacin medication, the medication should be stopped immediately and appropriate supportive measures should be taken. The medication should be administered under the supervision of a physician.
