What are intercostal muscles?

The so-called intercostal muscles are the muscles between neighboring ribs. There are 24 ribs in the human body, 12 on the left and 12 on the right, and the neighboring ribs are connected to each other by intercostal muscles and fascia. When the intercostal muscles contract, they expand the entire thorax, at which point the body inhales. When the intercostal muscles relax, the thorax slowly retracts and the body exhales. When you eat ribs, you are eating the intercostal muscles of the animal. Intercostal muscles for the human body is very important, this part of the muscle once the damage, or due to nerve damage caused by paralysis here, then the human body will appear very serious breathing difficulties, such as in the neck, chest serious spinal cord injury, may lead to intercostal muscle dysfunction here, the patient has a very obvious breathing difficulties, and even serious respiratory failure which can lead to death.
