How long to recover from thyroid surgery

After undergoing thyroid surgery, it takes about two weeks to return to normal activities, but a patient’s recovery time depends on the extent and type of surgery received, with traditional open surgery taking longer to recover than minimally invasive surgery. There may be some changes in the patient’s voice after the surgery, such as hoarseness and difficulty speaking. These changes are due to damage to the patient’s laryngeal nerves during the surgery, and may typically last about two weeks. However, if other trauma is sustained during the recovery process, the symptoms may become permanent. With the Nerve Integrity Monitoring System, patients can be helped to minimize the risk of nerve damage that occurs during surgery, in addition to the fact that individuals need to take extra care of the incision area after surgery to try to avoid inflammation and infection, and can usually return to their normal lives in about two weeks.
