Erythromycin belongs to the macrolide class of antimicrobials. Erythromycin ointment can be applied topically to wounds for purulent skin diseases such as impetigo, small burns, infections of ulcerated surfaces and common acne. It has a topical anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect. After adequate local disinfection and rinsing, the ointment can be applied evenly to the surface of the injured wound. Severe wound infections require further removal of purulent secretions, removal or excision of necrotic as well as inactive tissues, and nodular sutures can be chosen for relatively faster healing if the condition permits.
