Is it normal for bowel cancer patients to have irregular stools after surgery?

It is relatively common for colorectal cancer patients to have unformed stools after surgery, which cannot be considered as a normal situation, but only as a necessary process. Most of the bowel cancer patients have removed part of the intestinal canal during the surgery, done intestinal resection and intestinal anastomosis, and some patients have done enterostomy. In this case, when part of the intestine is removed or anastomosis is done, there will be a transient gastrointestinal tract dysfunction, which is mainly caused by intestinal reabsorption and inflammatory stimulation of the anastomosis causing irregular stools. Generally, this condition can be relieved or return to normal in about 3-6 months. If it still cannot be relieved after 3-6 months, patients are suggested to follow up and have some relevant examinations to exclude the lesions caused by tumor metastasis, anastomotic inflammation irritation or long-term failure to heal, etc. Some symptomatic supportive treatments can be targeted to relieve the situation of irregular stools.
