Are elevated tumor markers dangerous?

Elevated tumor markers are not necessarily dangerous, but if one or more of the markers are more than twice the normal value, it is a sign of possible danger. Elevated tumor markers do not necessarily mean cancer; some benign conditions such as inflammation and smoking can cause elevated tumor markers. Tumor markers that are more than 3 times higher than normal are clinically diagnostic, and those that are more than 10 times higher than normal are considered to be malignant tumors. However, simply high tumor marker is not the basis for diagnosing tumor, but also need to do targeted related examination. For example, if the tumor marker of gastrointestinal tract is elevated, gastroscopy and enteroscopy should be done, and the final diagnosis should be made based on the result of pathological examination. Don’t be alarmed by the elevation of tumor markers, first of all, you should exclude other interferences and review the test again. If the indicators continue to rise more than three times the normal value, then go to the hospital for systematic examination.
