How to Rehabilitate a Comminuted Fracture of the Tibial Plateau

Rehabilitation training for comminuted tibial plateau fracture should be carried out according to different periods, mainly including muscle isometric contraction exercises, joint mobility training and weight bearing and other rehabilitation training.
1. Postoperative day 1: isometric contraction of quadriceps muscle to maintain muscle tone, 3 times a day, within 15 minutes each time, and active movement of toes and ankle joints at the same time.
2. 1~7 weeks after surgery: Perform active knee flexion exercises, or have the therapist help the movement. After wound healing, active or assisted active knee range of motion exercises can be increased. Perform muscle strength training for the quadriceps and the muscles around the hip joint at the same time as the knee joint movement training to prevent muscle atrophy.
3. 8~14 weeks after the operation: after the swelling of the affected limb subsides, the affected limb can walk without weight bearing with the help of double crutches. In order to prevent the joint surface from collapsing, the patient should strictly keep the affected limb unweighted for 6~8 weeks, and the weight bearing should be decided according to the condition of fracture healing on X-ray film. Generally speaking, 6~8 weeks after the fracture, with the help of double crutches, the affected limb can be gradually weight-bearing 50%, and can be fully weight-bearing 12~14 weeks after the operation.
Patients with comminuted tibial plateau fracture should carry out rehabilitation training under the guidance of professionals after their condition is stabilized, so as to avoid delaying their condition.
