Life expectancy after gastrectomy is generally based on the extent of the primary condition, as well as the individual’s physical condition. It is not a generalization as individual patients vary greatly in their physical condition. It may not affect the life expectancy, or it may survive for a few months or 5 years or so.
1. Benign diseases: If the patient has gastrectomy due to benign diseases, such as gastric perforation, gastric ulcer, gastric neurofibroma, etc., in general, if the post-operative care is good and there are no other complications, most of the patients will live the same life as the normal people, and it is recommended that the patient should undergo regular rehabilitation checkups.
2. Malignant diseases: If the gastrectomy is caused by malignant diseases, such as gastric cancer, etc., the survival time after surgery varies greatly due to the many pathological types of gastric cancer and the big difference in the degree of malignancy, and the patients need to have subsequent chemotherapy (e.g., vincristine, 5-FU and other treatments), etc. If the patients are actively treated and there are no other complications, most of them will survive as normal.
If actively treated and without other complications, the survival rate is around 7%~30% within 5 years; if the treatment is not timely enough and the follow-up treatment after surgery is not effective, it may lead to metastasis of cancer cells and the survival period may be shortened.
The specific survival life span is related to the degree of disease and individual physical condition, etc. It is recommended that patients keep a good mindset and actively cooperate with doctors for relevant treatments.
