What is Spinal Balance

Balance is the greatest wisdom in life. As a chiropractor, I deeply appreciate that maintaining balance in the spine is both a skill and an art. Everyone should learn the balance of spinal health, such as valuing the balance of lumbar muscle strength to achieve a balance of lumbar spine movement and protection. In fact, there is communication between our spine and us, and the trick to good spinal balance is to listen to the voice of your own spine. The first level of spinal balance: the anatomical level The spine, the pillar of life, is the central force axis of the human skeletal framework and is composed of multiple vertebrae and intervertebral discs. The surrounding tendons and ligaments are closely linked to the stable structure, constituting the central axis of balance of the body’s three-dimensional dynamics. The first level of balance refers to the symmetry of the spine itself. Balance and symmetry are universal phenomena that exist in nature. Modern animals are the descendants of left-right symmetrical ancestors; symmetry exists even in the descendants of non-left-right symmetrical animals like sea anemones. Balanced symmetry seems to be an expression or phenomenon of everything in the world, and it becomes one of the basic theories and expressions of various disciplines, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, architecture, aesthetics, painting, etc. The traditional explanation of why symmetry produces beauty is that it represents harmony, comfort and dignity, and thus gives people a sense of beauty. Symmetry and balance are not only external beauty for people, but also a need for health and survival. The spine also needs to be balanced, and a beautiful back curve is always the perfect pursuit of an artist! A good minimally invasive spine surgeon should also have the eye of an artist! Balance of the spine includes overall balance, regional balance and local balance: overall balance includes head-pelvis axis balance; regional balance includes shoulder level, pelvis level, etc.; local balance includes the balance of the spine in three planes. The physician should have a comprehensive understanding of the balance of the spinal patient. Some physicians pay attention to overall balance and neglect regional and local balance; some physicians pay attention to regional and local balance and neglect overall balance. When the spine is out of balance, the spinal ligaments and visceral ligaments are twisted, blood flow in the blood vessels is blocked, and nerves are irritated or compressed. This series of changes must cause abnormalities in the function of the internal organs, which in the long run will cause organic pathology. The second level of spinal balance: the physiopathological and motor level This is the balance I really want to talk about here. It is the balance of the spine throughout its life, a balance viewed through a developmental and dynamic lens. We are born with a spine that is young and can perform a variety of functions and is in balance. As we age, degeneration occurs and the spinal balance is disrupted and becomes unbalanced. At this time, minor imbalances can be corrected by ourselves. In other words, although spinal degeneration makes our pillar of life no longer perfect, our own powerful ability to adjust and correct it can bring it into some degree of balance. We need to cherish this balance. We may lament the fact that our spine is no longer perfect, which is unfortunate and sad, but if we live our lives with attention to proper posture, we will “mend the fold” and possibly allow the spine to work properly, balancing our lives and serving us rather than becoming a source of pain and a burden to us. However, too often we don’t pay much attention to this, so that the balance of the spine is again disrupted, becomes imbalanced, and becomes uncorrectable by its own volume. The role of the chiropractor is to help you when your spine is completely out of balance and cannot correct itself. This little bit of help gives us a chance to establish a new balance. It is not a highly perfect balance, but it is a limited balance at some level (a mending balance) so that life can continue to move forward. Chiropractors use their medical skills to create a balanced spine so that these crippling beauties can bloom more perfectly. For example: 1, the elderly because of compression fractures of the spine, etc., the doctor through minimally invasive, so that the elderly can straighten the spine, can walk, and live out their old age in peace likewise become a long-cherished dream. 2, young adults lumbar disc protrusion, compression of nerves, back pain, leg pain, numbness, work and study are affected, life imbalance, doctors through minimally invasive intervertebral foramen, contact compression, relieve pain, so that life becomes balanced. 3, the elderly lumbar spinal stenosis, slippage, lumbar instability, doctors also through surgery, to help achieve a new balance. Therefore, spinal balance is mainly our own efforts, which require our lifelong efforts, and we cannot always rely on the efforts of doctors, who only help a little when it is critical, and after correction, reaching a new balance still requires our own efforts. The spine is not balanced anymore, so we make our own broken, we need to get it right again.
