Symptoms of Mouth Sores in Infants

Thrush, also known as Candida stomatitis, is common in infants, and it usually appears as small white spots, or as white or bluish-white velvety patches. It tends to spread, especially to the pharynx or tonsils. Prompt treatment is usually recommended with sodium bicarbonate solution for scrubbing, or aqueous methyl viologen solution can be used. It is also recommended to disinfect breastfeeding utensils, including the mother’s nipples, over a long period of time. It is also recommended that the child be properly cleansed with mouthwash, and that the lips and mouth be protected from dryness and cracking during the winter months, and that bad habits such as licking the lips or sucking the tongue be corrected to avoid recurrences.
