This baby girl has floating bunions on both hands, and when she arrived she was wrapped in a small quilt, she couldn’t talk yet, she would only scream occasionally, she didn’t cry and didn’t make a fuss, she was very well behaved and cute. The baby’s right hand is a 3B type floating bunion and the left hand is a 4B type floating bunion, which definitely requires surgery because if not corrected, the baby’s hands will not be able to do anything in the future. The baby was brought in by his mom and dad, and as soon as he came in, he told me that the baby’s wrist seemed to have some problems too, often turning in one direction. In fact, most babies with floating thumbs have this phenomenon. Normally, our radius is slightly longer than the ulna, but babies with floating thumbs have a little bit of abduction to one side because the radius is not particularly well developed and unsupported, so the radius is a little bit shorter than the ulna. The parents were very nervous about this and repeatedly asked me if this was a problem and if surgical intervention was needed. The parents’ feelings are understandable, but it doesn’t matter, we can see the baby’s state when he/she is sleeping, if the wrist can be pulled straight, it is not a big problem. The most important problem that the baby needs to solve is the reconstruction of the floating thumb in both hands. The treatment of the floating thumb in both hands is a little bit more troublesome because the thumb of the other hand has a little bit of metacarpal bone, but this one in the left hand is very little and the surgery is very complicated. The baby’s father was very worried and asked me if reconstruction was possible. This is definitely possible, but due to the special nature of the floating thumb, the metacarpal bones and tendons are not very good and have neither form nor function. So the floating thumb has to be done in two stages. The second stage is to establish the function of the thumb, so that the thumb can move. After a period of scientific functional exercise, the baby will be able to do some pinching, gripping and grasping movements with the hand, write, and screw the cap of a bottle, which is a very crucial point for the recovery of the function of the thumb. . At present, the baby’s surgery has been scheduled, both hands together. It is estimated that after the surgery, the baby will also be able to talk, and we hope that the little baby can have a better life after the surgery.
