What should I do if I have a loose tooth? This is a question that we are often asked by our patients in our daily clinical work. First of all, we need to know why teeth become loose. The most common causes of loose teeth are trauma and periodontal disease, of which periodontal disease is the most dangerous and often neglected. Periodontal disease is a common disease and a multi-morbidity, if not effectively treated in time, resulting in loose teeth and even loss of all teeth, seriously affecting chewing and digestive functions, periodontal disease leads to bleeding gums and bad breath, hindering social activities, and even lead to or aggravate certain systemic diseases. The clinical treatment of periodontal disease consists of three steps, starting with a dental cleaning to remove plaque and calculus and control local inflammation. Then the critical restorative treatment is performed, mainly through splinting to stabilize the loose tooth. If the loose tooth is not fixed after the inflammation is controlled, the tooth will be subjected to external forces in all directions during chewing and the degree of loosening will further increase. There are three types of splints commonly used in clinical practice: movable splints, fixed splints and sleeve crown denture. Although the fixed effect of movable splints is not the best, but it is easy to clean the teeth and the cost is low; fixed splints have better fixed effect, but it is not easy to clean the teeth; sleeve crown denture has good fixed effect and easy to clean the teeth, but it is technically difficult and expensive. Finally, the patient’s own oral hygiene maintenance is also very important, that is, to develop good oral hygiene habits, regular oral examination and cleaning. After years of clinical research, I have proved that this method is effective in the treatment of periodontal disease and can greatly extend the retention time of loose teeth in the mouth, improve the chewing efficiency and greatly improve the quality of life of patients, which is welcomed by the majority of patients.
