There are several types of intestinal polyps which type is the most serious

Types of intestinal polyps include inflammatory polyps, misshapen polyps, hyperplastic polyps, and adenomatous polyps; of these, adenomatous polyps are the most serious, and are prone to progression to colon cancer. 1. Inflammatory polyps: Inflammatory polyps are formed after mucosal ulceration and regeneration in patients with intestinal inflammation (e.g., ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease) and residual intact colonic mucosa. Inflammatory polyps usually do not transform into tumors. 2. Misconjugated polyp: Misconjugated polyp is a mass formed when the normal tissue growth of the intestinal tract becomes disordered. Misconjugated polyps are usually benign, but may grow progressively and then become symptomatic or malignant. Therefore, these polyps should be removed. 3. Hyperplastic polyps: Hyperplastic polyps are the most common non-tumor polyps in the colon, and patients usually need regular colonoscopy for review. 4. Adenomatous polyps: about 2/3 of colon polyps are adenomatous polyps, adenomatous polyps are neoplastic polyps, which are prone to progress to colon cancer, and are more serious compared to other kinds of polyps. Patients who find polyps are advised to seek medical attention in time for a pathologic examination to clarify the type of polyp and then treat it aggressively.
