What causes brain calcification?

Calcification of the brain may be caused by the physiological phenomenon of normal aging of the brain with age, or it may be related to metabolic diseases, parasitic infections or special types of diseases.
1. Physiological phenomenon: brain tissue gradually ages with age, and calcification may occur in some parts, such as the choroid plexus, basal ganglia area, etc. This kind of calcification usually does not cause too much disturbance to life and can be observed.
2. Pathologic factors:
(1) Metabolic diseases: for example, parathyroid glands are related to calcium metabolism, and when the parathyroid glands function abnormally, calcification may appear in brain tissue. Calcification caused by this reason is more symmetrical and can appear on both sides of the brain.
(2) Parasitic infection: If there is a parasitic infection in the brain, small dots of calcification may also appear after the death of the worms, such as cerebral cysticercosis, etc. Small dots of calcification can be seen on CT after the death of cysticercus.
(3) Special type of disease: basal ganglia calcification (Fahr’s disease) is a special type of disease, and head CT can show contralateral bilateral basal ganglia calcification.
For cerebral calcification, it is recommended to go to the hospital to clarify the cause of cerebral calcification to avoid adverse effects.
