If the cervix is not open but has good cervical ripeness, labor can usually be induced by an injection of oxytocin, i.e., uterotonin, but if the ripeness is poor, the use of oxytocin is usually not recommended. Oxytocin is one of the commonly used medications in late pregnancy and generally helps to open the cervix by intensifying contractions. Oxytocin can be used if the cervix is not open, but it must be based on the maturity of the cervix. If the cervix is well matured, oxytocin can be used even if the cervix is not open; however, oxytocin is not recommended if the cervix is relatively poorly matured and if the cervix is still relatively hard. Whether oxytocin can be used when the cervix is not open needs to be determined on a case-by-case basis under the supervision of a doctor. In addition, the use of specific drugs to induce labor should be under the guidance of a doctor.
