The length of time a cervical biopsy needs to be performed is determined by each woman’s specific condition. Women usually have a cervical biopsy only if they have a high-risk HPV infection and have an abnormal TCT. Women may go five or even ten years after a cervical biopsy before a second test is needed, but there are some women who do not need to be tested again after a cervical biopsy because the later tests do not show any problems. Cervical biopsies are not performed as a routine test because they are invasive and therefore do not need to be performed every year.
