The two sides of the axillary temperature are not the same and the slightly higher one should prevail. This is only possible if the thermometer is mercury and the measurements are accurate. Even if the same thermometer is used in the same armpit and the temperature is measured at an interval of ten minutes, the values may be slightly different. Because human body temperature changes over time, there is likely to be some variation in body temperature in both armpits. Underarm temperature is slightly lower than the body’s core temperature, which is transmitted to the armpits through the bloodstream and other pathways. It is possible that the temperature in one of the armpits may be slightly higher due to the unevenness of the left and right conduction. However, a slightly higher measured temperature is more reflective of the body’s core temperature.
