About dilated optometry for children

The procedure for children’s dilated eye examinations: 1. routine eye examinations (bare eye visual acuity, old lens corrected visual acuity, eye position, fundus, etc.) except for contraindications to dilatation, and obtain dilating medication; 2. appointment time: direct appointment for outpatients, telephone appointment for out-of-town patients; 3. medication ordering: if there is no special medical advice, medication will be ordered 3 days before the agreed time of the examination, twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening) for a total of 3 days, and the fourth day of the examination. 4, optometry: generally divided into initial and re-testing. Initial test: 3 days after the drug is ordered, the patient’s eye (static) refraction is detected. In case of combined strabismus, the eye position after dilated pupil should be checked in the outpatient clinic; some patients can be directly dispensed according to the prescription (without retesting). Retesting: After the initial examination, the patient’s eye (dynamic) refraction will be tested again in about 3 weeks after the effect of the dilating medication has worn off. Most patients need to have a repeat test to obtain a proper prescription. Special Note: Since some abnormalities in the eyes can be masked by dilated pupils and some patients are not suitable for dilated pupils, it is best to go to the hospital for an examination before deciding whether and how to dilate.
