It is common for clinicians to observe the color of the lower eyelids of patients with anemia to determine the severity of the anemia. Anemia is a deficiency of hemoglobin in the body and can be classified as mild, moderate, severe or very severe depending on the severity. Adult men with hemoglobin below 130g/L are anemic, and adult women with hemoglobin below 120g/L are anemic. In mild anemia, the hemoglobin is greater than 90 g/L but lower than the normal values mentioned above; in moderate anemia, the hemoglobin is between 60-89 g/L; in severe anemia, the hemoglobin is between 30-59 g/L; and in very severe anemia, the hemoglobin is less than 30 g/L. Different degrees of anemia have distinct differences in the color of the lower eyelids, and most patients with anemia will have pale eyelids, which of course requires specialist to diagnose.
