Ochre’s main effects are to calm the liver and subdue yang (suppressing too much yang rising in the liver), to re-centralize and subdue rebelliousness, to cool and stop bleeding (cooling and moistening the blood, preventing bleeding), and to treat dizziness and tinnitus, vomiting, and yelping (hiccups). Ochre is an ore of the mineral hematite, which is bitter in taste and cold in nature, and belongs to the liver, heart, lung and stomach meridians. With the effects of calming the liver and submerging yang, re-centering and subduing rebelliousness, cooling the blood and stopping bleeding, Dai Ochre can be used for dizziness and tinnitus, vomiting, yelping, eructation, wheezing, vomiting blood, epistaxis, and discharging blood from a leakage (excessive menstrual flow or more than a few drops). The drug should be used with caution in pregnant women, and is contraindicated in cases of yang deficiency, qi deficiency and dryness of fluid.
