Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae has the effects of regulating qi and strengthening the spleen, drying dampness and resolving phlegm (expelling dampness and resolving phlegm by drying dampness), and is used for treating stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach, coughing with cold phlegm, damp phlegm, eructation (hiccup), vomiting, and paralysis of the chest (chest tightness and pain). It should be used with caution in cases of qi deficiency, hematemesis, dry cough due to yin deficiency, and red tongue with little fluid and internal solid heat.
Poria has the efficacy of inducing diuresis, seeping dampness, subduing swelling, strengthening the spleen and tranquilizing the heart, and is mainly used in treating diarrhea due to deficiency of the spleen, edema, phlegm (pathological product formed by impaired metabolism of water and fluid), insomnia and palpitation. It should be used with caution for those with deficiency of cold and essence, deficiency of yin without dampness or heat, and deficiency of qi.
