The difference between polio and cerebral palsy

Poliomyelitis and cerebral palsy both cause motor dysfunction in children, but they are fundamentally different: first, the cause of the disease. The onset of pediatric cerebral palsy is mainly related to perinatal factors, such as intrauterine infections and hypoxia before birth; preterm birth or neonatal asphyxia; bilirubin encephalopathy or intracranial hemorrhage after birth and other adverse factors. Poliomyelitis is caused by infection with the poliovirus, resulting in motor dysfunction. Secondly, the symptoms are different. In children with poliomyelitis, there will be movement disorders and atrophy of one side of the limbs due to neurotrophic disorders, while cerebral palsy is mainly characterized by lagging motor development and abnormal muscle tone.
