Symptoms of phlegm-dampness include coughing and spitting up sticky phlegm, slippery phlegm that is easy to swallow, heavy limbs (weakness of limbs, sinking of the hair), little food and greasy mouth, whitish and greasy moss, and a moist or slippery pulse. The danger of phlegm-dampness is that it may lead to menstrual disorders and joint pain in women. If phlegm-dampness is embedded in the lungs, symptoms such as coughing and wheezing, phlegm ringing in the throat, sticky phlegm with a white color, chest tightness and shortness of breath may occur; if phlegm-dampness turns into heat, symptoms such as phlegm with a yellowish consistency and high volume, spitting of bloody phlegm, swelling and pain in the chest, heat and dryness in the mouth may occur; if phlegm-dampness is trapped in the spleen, symptoms such as yellowish color (yellowish and lusterless face), fatigue (mental exhaustion and weakness), distension of the epigastric region (belly), and loose stools can be seen. The danger of phlegm-dampness is mainly joint pain if trapped in the joints; phlegm-dampness can also lead to menstrual disorders and menstrual cramps in women; and phlegm-dampness can further lead to blood stasis in severe cases. When phlegm-dampness occurs, it should be regulated with reasonable medication under the guidance of professional Chinese medicine practitioners, and should not be used on its own to avoid affecting the condition.
