Herpes simplex virus type 1 IgG is high but IgM is normal indicating that the patient has been infected with herpes simplex virus type 1 and is now cured. There are two main types of herpes simplex viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 infections occur mainly on the face, mouth and lips, and herpes simplex virus type 2 infections occur mainly in the genital area. Antibodies to herpes simplex viruses include lgG and lgM. When both lgG and lgM are high, it indicates that herpes simplex virus is in the active stage of infection. When lgG is high and lgM is normal, it means that the patient’s body has been infected with the herpes simplex virus, only that the antibodies to the virus have remained in the body and have now been cured. Herpes simplex virus infection is characterized by easy recurrence and self-limitation. Patients with high IgG but normal IgM of herpes simplex virus type 1 are usually cured and can go to the hospital for regular checkups to prevent recurrence of the disease.
