Chondritis occurs in the cartilage of the ribs and joints and can be relieved or even cured with aggressive treatment and usually does not affect the life expectancy of the patient. The cause of chondromalacia, which occurs in the rib and articular cartilage, is unclear and may be due to viral infection, chronic joint ligament strain or malnutrition. The main manifestations are local swelling, pain, and widening of the rib cartilage and labral or ectropion of the rib arch. Symptomatic treatment is the main focus, patients are instructed to avoid strain, appropriate rest for upper limbs, local physiotherapy or hot compresses, external blood-stasis activating drugs, active treatment of cardiopulmonary disease, oral analgesic drugs, or local closed disposal, or even incision and drainage, milder cases can be self-healing, more serious cases can also be significantly relieved, and usually does not affect the patient’s life expectancy. Patients should limit their activities during treatment, especially avoiding strenuous joint movements, correcting body posture, and increasing the intake of high-quality protein.
