What is the normal value of PSA?

Under normal circumstances, serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) does not enter the bloodstream directly, so serum PSA concentrations in normal men are very low. The normal value of serum PSA is generally considered to be (0-4)ng/ml, and may vary slightly from hospital to hospital depending on the standard of their own testing instruments and reagents used.

  • When the serum PSA (shown as tPSA on the test sheet) is greater than 10 ng/ml, prostate cancer should be highly suspected and requires vigilance and prompt consultation with a urologist.
  • When tPSA  is between 4 and 10 ng/ml, it is difficult to determine if the patient may have prostate cancer and the diagnosis needs to be made in conjunction with other tests.
